Course Descriptions: Religious Education

The religious education department offers courses designed to equip persons for effective leadership in educational and pastoral ministries. The scriptural, theological, and educational foundations, as well as the practical implementation, of religious education programs in various faith traditions are emphasized. Professional leadership, effective organizational management, and the dynamics of faith development and spiritual formation are central concerns of this area of theological study.

Note the following abbreviations: PR = prerequisite; CR = corequisite; PR/CR = either a prerequisite or a corequisite. Corequisites may be taken either at the same time as or before the course listed. Prerequisites and corequisites may be waived only with the permission of the Dean and the instructor. 

RE601 Foundations of Religious Education
A consideration of the biblical, theological, psychological, and spiritual foundations and current fundamental issues in religious education. PR/CR = TH601.

RE605 Teaching and Curriculum in Religious Education
An examination of the theory and practice of varied teaching and learning styles, current issues in curriculum and pedagogy, and skills for curriculum design and assessment. PR/CR = TH601.

RE630 Principles of Youth Ministry
An exploration of a comprehensive approach to youth ministry, including biblical and theological foundations, principles and approaches, and components and structures. PR/CR = TH601.

RE633 Pastoral and Spiritual Care of Youth
An overview of pastoral and spiritual care as applied to adolescents and their families, including preventive as well as supportive approaches and means of nurturing faith development. PR/CR = TH601.

RE640 Spiritual Gifts for Congregational Ministry
An exploration of biblical spiritual gifts, with insights from charismatic and mainline churches, in order to enable students to recognize, develop, and share their gifts within parishes. Cross-listed as PT640 and SP640. PR/CR = TH601.

RE643 Leading the Retreat
An exploration of different types of spiritual retreats and the skills needed for their design, execution, and evaluation. Cross-listed as SP643. PR/CR = TH601.

RE645 The Ministry of Leadership
An exploration of the theological foundations for leadership, current models of secular and church leadership, and current issues in order to develop an informed personal leadership style. Cross-listed as PT645. PR/CR = TH601.

RE701 Biblical Storytelling: Narrative Interpretation of Scripture
A study and practicum in the theory and practice of biblical storytelling as a means of proclamation and spiritual formation. Cross-listed as PT701. PR/CR = TH601, BS600, and two additional BS courses. 

RE705 Contemporary Catholic Catechetics
An examination of the mission and ministry of catechesis in the contemporary Catholic parish. PR/CR = TH601.

RE714 Teaching Adults in the Church
An exploration of the unique ways in which adults learn, and of the various models and methods for teaching them and integrating adult education into the total life of the church. PR/CR = TH601.

RE715 Ministry with Older Adults
An examination of the emotional, physical, and spiritual dimensions of aging in America; issues such as stereotyping, healthcare, and housing; and ministries for and with older persons. Cross-listed as PT715. PR/CR = TH601.

RE716 Youth & Young Adult Culture & the Contemporary Church
An overview of contemporary culture, generational issues, and the church's mission to enhance its effectiveness with postmodern youth. Cross-listed as PT716. PR = TH601.

RE719 Current Issues in Youth Ministry
An exploration of the variety of personal, relational, and cultural issues (including media, sexuality, and substance abuse) affecting adolescents, in order to prepare students to minister effectively to postmodern youth. PR/CR = TH601.

RE727 Small Groups in the Life of the Church
An introduction to the skills and processes needed for the ministry, learning, and fellowship accomplished through various kinds of small groups. Cross-listed as PT727. PR/CR = TH601.

RE734 Faith Development through the Life Cycle
An examination of models of psychological, moral, faith, and spiritual development through all the life stages, and their implications for the church's ministry of formation and education. Cross-listed as SP734. PR/CR = TH601.

RE798 Youth Ministry Practicum
A supervised field placement experience in youth ministry. PR = TH601, RE630, RE633, and completion of additional requirements toward certificate or degree as determined by advisor.

RE799 Religious Education Practicum
A supervised field placement experience in religious education. PR = TH601, RE601, and completion of additional requirements toward certificate or degree as determined by advisor.
